Preventive care

Cleanings and exams that catch problems early.

The single most valuable thing you can do for your teeth is keep your six-month appointment. Professional cleanings and a careful exam are how we keep small problems small.

A professional cleaning removes the calcified plaque (tartar) that your toothbrush physically can’t reach — particularly along the gum line and between teeth. Plaque hardens into tartar within days, and once it’s hard, no amount of home flossing will get it off. Removing it is what stops gum inflammation before it becomes gum disease.

Your hygienist will measure the depth of your gum pockets — the early warning sign for periodontal trouble — then remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, polish your teeth to remove surface stains, and floss everything carefully. If you have a strong gag reflex or particularly sensitive areas, say so up front. Small adjustments to the instruments and water temperature make the appointment much more comfortable.

The exam — what Dr. Agrawal is looking for

The cleaning is the visible part. The exam is the part that prevents the expensive surprises. Dr. Agrawal checks each tooth for new decay, looks at existing fillings and crowns for breakdown, evaluates your gum tissue and the way your bite closes, and screens for oral cancer at the same visit. We discuss any X-rays that are due and walk you through what they show.

When something needs follow-up, you’ll hear directly what it is, what it costs, and what happens if you choose to wait. No pressure, no upselling. Most visits end with “everything looks good, see you in six months.”

How often is right for you?

Twice a year is the baseline. Some patients do better with three- or four-month recall — typically those with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar formation, or dry mouth from medication. We’ll be honest about which schedule fits your situation. For most western Augusta County families, two cleanings a year is plenty.

Frequently asked

Cleanings and exams — common questions.

How long does a cleaning appointment take?

Plan on 45 to 60 minutes for most patients. If it’s been a long time since your last cleaning, or there’s significant tartar to remove, the first visit can run longer — we don’t rush it, because rushing it is how things get missed.

Twice a year — really?

For most healthy adults, yes. Plaque hardens into tartar in a matter of days, and once it’s tartar, only the hygienist’s tools can remove it. Six months is the cadence that keeps tartar from building up to the point of inflaming your gums. Some patients — those with periodontal history, dry mouth, or heavy tartar formation — do better on a three- or four-month schedule.

Do you take X-rays at every visit?

No. Routine bitewing X-rays are typically taken once a year, and a more comprehensive full-mouth series every three to five years. We follow the ADA’s guidelines and only take films when there’s a clinical reason. Pregnancy, medical conditions, and individual risk levels can adjust the schedule.

I have sensitive teeth — will the cleaning hurt?

Tell your hygienist before she starts. There are several adjustments — gentler instruments, topical desensitizer, warming the water — that make sensitive cleanings comfortable. If you’ve avoided cleanings because of past discomfort, please come in and let us try again the right way.

What if my gums bleed when I floss?

Bleeding gums almost always mean gum inflammation (gingivitis) — a sign that plaque has been sitting at the gum line longer than it should. The good news: gingivitis is reversible. A professional cleaning plus a few weeks of consistent home care usually clears it up entirely.

Do you accept Virginia Dental Club?

Yes — Virginia Dental Club includes your routine cleanings, exams, and necessary X-rays for the year, plus a flat discount on every other treatment. It’s how a lot of our patients without dental insurance keep up with routine care affordably.
