For your kids

Gentle dental care for kids.

Western Augusta County families have brought their children to this Churchville office for generations. The pace is unhurried, the chair is calm, and your child won’t leave the visit frightened of dentistry.

How a child experiences their first few dental visits sets the pattern for the rest of their life. Dental anxiety in adults almost always traces back to one or two rough early visits. That’s why we don’t rush kids’ appointments.

For the first visit — typically around age one to three — the goal is mostly comfort. Your child sits in the chair, sees the instruments, hears what each one does, and lets us look in their mouth at whatever pace feels okay. There’s no pressure to clean, no procedure to push through, and your child leaves with the experience of having been listened to. That’s the foundation.

What we cover as your child grows

By age two or three, most kids are ready for a real cleaning. We count their teeth, gently brush them with a soft polishing cup, talk about how to brush and floss at home, and answer the questions kids actually have (which are often very good questions). Cleanings continue every six months, the same way they will throughout their life.

When the six-year molars come in, we’ll talk about sealants — a thin protective coating that prevents the most common type of childhood cavity. Twelve-year molars get the same treatment when they arrive. For children at higher cavity risk, in-office fluoride treatments at cleaning visits give the enamel extra protection.

When something is wrong

If your child has a chipped tooth from a fall, a toothache from a cavity, or a permanent tooth knocked out at recess, call us at 540-337-6004. We hold same-day emergency slots during clinical hours specifically so western Augusta County families don’t have to drive thirty miles for tooth care.

Through every step — first cleaning, first cavity, first lost tooth — your child is in a calm environment with people who’ve done this for decades. Many of the children we see today are the grandchildren of patients we’ve known for forty years.

Frequently asked

Kids’ dentistry — common questions.

When should my child have their first dental visit?

The American Dental Association recommends a child's first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth erupting. That sounds early — and the appointment itself is mostly about getting your child comfortable with the chair. It builds the habit early, which is the real point.

How do you handle a nervous child?

Slowly. We start by letting your child sit in the chair without anything happening, talk through what every instrument does, and never push past where they're comfortable. For most kids, the second visit is dramatically easier than the first. If your child has had a difficult dental experience elsewhere, tell us — we'll go even slower.

What about sealants?

Dental sealants are a thin protective coating painted on the chewing surfaces of the back molars, where most childhood cavities start. The application takes a few minutes per tooth, doesn't require anesthesia, and protects those surfaces for years. We typically recommend sealants on the six-year and twelve-year molars.

Does my child need fluoride treatments?

It depends on their cavity risk. Children who get cavities easily, drink mostly bottled or filtered water, or have visible early enamel weakness usually benefit from in-office fluoride at their cleaning visits. We'll talk with you about what makes sense for your child.

Do you see teens?

Yes, all the way through high school. Teenagers often have different concerns — wisdom teeth, orthodontic retainers, the appearance of their front teeth — and we address them honestly and without making teenagers feel lectured.

Can the whole family come on the same day?

We try to make that happen. Family appointments stacked back-to-back are easy to schedule, and a lot of our western Augusta County families do it that way. Call 540-337-6004 and our front desk will work it out with you.
